No.57 October 2003 | Contex HOME FROM THE CHAIR - ROSE BAILLIE RESEARCH FRAMEWORKOut at last, the long awaited A research framework for London Archaeology 2002. Jointly published by English Heritage and the Museum of London, this aims to identify the major research aims for London archaeology in the next few years and is available from MoLAS for £4.95. It is hoped this project will both focus attention on aspects of the archaeological picture that are most worthy of detailed study and encourage co-ordinated, collaborative research. The basic aim is obtain a better understanding of who Londoners were and how they lived their lives in the past, rather than just record what they happened to leave behind while doing so. A major part of this work may be done without picking up a trowel or getting wet, for the raw material already exists in the LAARC, in the finds and records of hundreds of excavations that no-one had the time or resources to fully study or publish at the time of their discovery. Whereas the need to excavate a historic site before it is redeveloped is now recognised and provided for, it is far harder to find time and finance for the more considered and analytical work on the Archive. Some research can be done by archaeological units in the course of their contractual work and other subjects tackled by free-lance researchers, academics and students. There is a role however for the interested lay person, such as the typical COLAS member. Anyone with a topic they would like to investigate should not hesitate in contacting staff at the LAARC, who will be happy to help them get started. |
