THE KNOWLEDGE

London Brain Teaser No 52

London's street names can have some odd derivations. Can you identify the following thoroughfares from their origins? This is not an exact science so do not be surprised if your understanding differs from mine!

(a) This road was named after the niece and collaborator of Emma Cons who revived the nearby Old Vie Theatre.

(b) Richard Whittington once lived in this grand house, which has given its name to a street and a market.

(c) This "vale" is named after the victory of General Stuart over Napoleon in Italy, 1806.

(d) This City of London hill was once the home of Snorro.

(e) And finally, two choices for this lane - either felt-makers or beggars congregated here.
